Review: Icebreaker Vertex Drift Base Layer Set
Hello new favourite outfit! This 250 Icebreaker Vertex Drift set came into my life just a few days before Thanksgiving weekend and it was the perfect time to test out this matching wool base layer set. Crisp fall days have arrived and the focus has officially switched over to ‘get cozy and comfy’ mode, here on Vancouver Island. Although our winters may be mild, compared to some parts of the world, they are also wet, which can ‘get into your bones’ if you don’t have the right layering system. Enter this fab Icebreaker base layer set!
I have had a chance to test out the Vertex Drift Long Sleeve Half Zip Top and Leggings as main layers, while outdoors in mild temperatures of about 5-10 degrees, as well as while chillaxin indoors. 100% merino wool really is the secret to thermoregulating between indoors and outdoors and varying temperatures and levels of activity. In addition, merino wool is known for its antimicrobial (and anti stink!) properties, and this is always an ‘attractive’ feature, when you are sweating it out for long days or multi-days. I am looking forward to wearing this set as a base layer under a shell, during snowshoeing and even cross country skiing this winter!
Icebreaker Vertex Drift Base Layer Set Details
Here are the features of the set that stand out to me so far:
Softness. My first impression of the set was how surprisingly soft the 100% merino wool in a cozy ‘jacquard knit’ felt on my skin. Many wool products have an itchy feel to them, but this Vertex set was anything but that. It is so so soft and feels amazing.
Stretch & Fit. The material has a level of stretch that allows for ease of movement and creates a slim fit against the body. Many wool leggings and tops fit quite boxy and a bit rigid but this material is different, creating a nice hugging fit that moves with the body. Basically, the 250 Icebreaker Vertex Drift Base Layers feel like you are wearing pyjamas, yet they look and act like functional active wear (and they can be both;).
250 weight. This is a medium weight, that provides additional warmth beyond that of the 150 layers, but doesn’t add much in terms of bulk. A warm layer on its own and a super warm base layer when worn in addition to an outer and/or shell.
Fun pattern! The top and leggings come in a few different colours and the pattern takes what could have been a basic base layer set from blah to fun:)
Sizing. I am 5’5 “ and the small sized top and bottoms fit me perfectly.
Flatlock Seams and Gusset. Basically this means that there is nothing rubbing anywhere that you don’t want it to. This decreases the chance of chaffing which is a big win for long days of movement!
Brushed Waist Band. Snug but comfortable fit that does not dig in, but hugs the waist perfectly.
Stretch/Fit. These leggings fit like a glove and have the perfect amount of stretch and support to stay in place and hug the body.
Long Sleeve Half Zip Top
Zip neck collar. That extra few inches of 100% wool around your neck, just make this long sleeve even cozier.
1/2 zip. Allows for additional thermoregulation.
Offset flatlock shoulder seams. Anti chaffing! When you are wearing this top under a pack, you don’t have to worry about friction and chaffing.
Droptail hem. Additional coverage and length on the backside, keeps the chill down.
What I really think…
All in all, I am a big 2 thumbs up for the 250 Icebreaker Vertex Drift Base Layer Set and I cannot really come up with anything on the negative side. If you are in need of a cozy base layer that is fun, functional and technical then I would not hesitate to recommend this set for your cool and cold weather adventures! Go get it!
