Review: The North Face Base Camp Duffel

Let’s go on an adventure…to New Zealand! This fall I was lucky enough to travel the North Island of New Zealand for 6 glorious weeks, enjoying a second spring and early summer. I travelled by camper van and tiny car, I stayed in the van, hostels, tiny cabins and even slept in a caboose (check out Solscape!). I explored trails and beaches and more trails and more beaches. I wandered alone, I spent time with old and new friends. And I literally lived out of The North Face Base Camp Duffel the entire time. This is THE ultimate bag and I am so grateful to have had the chance to test it out for Altitude Sports on my New Zealand adventure! After 6 weeks of living together, we are pretty close now and I have to say I am head over heels for this super bag. If you need a rock solid adventure bag or if you have been eyeing these up, this review is for you! Have a read below and let me know if you have any questions at all about this duffel. Spoiler: It will rock your world. The North Face Base Camp Duffel is pretty much guaranteed to be a regret free purchase, if you ask me ;)

It’s a backpack! It’s a duffel! Wait! It’s both! My life on my back and on the airport conveyer belt…ready to fly!

Aint she purdy? My entire adventure life is in this bag;) Check out the multiple strap options: handles on the ends, backpack or duffel style, all ready to go when you are. And even a handy waterproof ID pocket. They really did think of everything.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Details

This bag is super simple but super rock solid. Everything you need and nothing you don't. Here are my favourite things about this bag:

Material. This bag is made of very durable laminate material that just feels insanely strong. And…it’s weatherproof. Yup! The zippers are heavy duty, it is double stitched and sealed like a beast. It was quite stiff when it first arrived, but the material has relaxed slightly to allow more flexibility, without losing any of its structure. Really, this bag is bomb proof. You don’t have to worry about it when you send it off on the airport conveyer belt. It will be just fine:)

Size/Shape. I could always get away with a bigger bag. But by going with the Medium, it forced me to keep my packing to the basics. Which, was really, way too much stuff anyways! At 71 litres, this bag was surprisingly easy to pack in and out of cars and houses and planes and vans. I haven’t seen the Large or Extra Large in action, so I can’t say how much bigger they would actually be, but, for backpacking and frequent moves, the Medium was just right. It’s really hard to believe it has 71 litres capacity when you look at it, because it just looks like a small duffle bag. But the dimensions of the bag magically absorb endless items and it was amazing how much ‘stuff’ I could fit in the duffel, including my Yoga mat!

Storage. There are 3 handy storage spaces within the bag that allow you to separate out certain items, which is a very nice feature. A flat, mesh zipped pouch lives on the inside of the lid of the duffel and it is the perfect place for documents and important things you want to keep flat and have quick access to. Outside there is a separate compartment on one end of the duffel that has quite a bit of storage and this is a great place to keep loose items that you want to keep separate from the main zone. Finally, inside the main compartment, there is a small stretch mesh pouch which I found perfect for storing laundry or small items of clothing. So smart!

Check it out over on Altitude Sports!

The perfect adventure travel system. Packing cubes fit like puzzle pieces in the North Face Base Camp Duffel. 6 weeks worth of gear fit easily inside this bag, including multiple pairs of shoes, camera equipment AND my Yoga mat, of course;) It really is amazing how much ‘stuff’ you can get into this bag!

Left: Flat, zipped pouch for files and important docs. Centre: Separated end zipped compartment for loose things. Right: All zipped up and ready for adventure! Let’s go!
